The theme song to one of my favorite TV shows goes as follows:
Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait...
The Earth began to cool,
The autotrophs began to drool,
Neanderthals developed tools,
We built a wall (we built the pyramids),
Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries,
That all started with the big bang!
The start of my favorite book goes as follows:
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
I wonder what that day looked like. If put more realistically and less poetically if God would have said Bang! And it would have been big. Yet, some have come to the conclusion that these stories are not each other’s equal. Their harmony is rejected. The way they push back against one another or as some say, to push the other out of the way. The choice becomes, will you believe in God OR science. We draw lines in the sand between wrong and right, because people believe they know the Truth. What neither side realizes is they are choosing absolutism over faith. They try to have perfect, unwavering faith by closing their minds and ears to others, but this has severe consequences. No matter what we believe we have a beautiful thing occurring in us,
the dance of two equals
named faith and doubt.
In the beginning they were called forth and commissioned by God into this dance;
Faith, give them hope
Doubt, make sure it is not false
Faith, make them bold
Doubt, make them humble
Faith, help them know
Doubt, help them understand
So faith built a house and room for doubt on each floor.
Let your faith dance with your doubts, because your faith doesn't need to be perfect. God is perfect. If you pursue him through doubt and fear your faith will only grow stronger. Don’t reject an idea because at face value it seems Godless or foolish, like some do with science or Christianity. Science is God’s handiwork. I believe God spoke elements into existence and he is the greatest theoretical physicist EVER, sorry Sheldon. And that same God formed you. So go and walk hand in hand with God and let him tell you all about science, doubt, and the immeasurable desperate relentless love for you.
Peace and Love,
PS: To look into this stuff and see who I stole these ideas from check out Rob Bell and the movie/book Life of Pi. Oh, and the Bible :)
